Vegetable-Tanned Leather is one of the oldest methods of making leather and has been used for thousands of years. It uses natural tannin found in barks, wood and other parts of plants to convert animal skin into leather. This is the most environmentally friendly way to tan leather and the process is very lengthy, therefore expensive. The tanned vegetable leather is widely recognised as the most desirable for high quality products. The occasional mark is not uncommon as this variety of tanned vegetable leather has the top grain surface still intact - this adds to the character of the product and this will age beautifully over time.

(With other, cheaper leathers the top grain is removed and used for garments. The underneath layer is then treated and dyed which removes all traces of the original grain which can make that leather look unnatural and sometimes even plastic.)

Aniline leather is a type of leather dyed exclusively with soluble dyes. The dye colours the leather without producing the uniform surface of a topcoat paint or insoluble pigmented sealant. The resulting product retains the hide's natural surface. Any visible variations on the surface of the undyed leather such as visible pores, scars, or other blemishes will remain visible. For this reason, only high-quality leather is suitable for aniline finishing.
